So much on my mind lately. First of all, some friends from work and I brewed up a clone of the Victory Hop Devil that is bubbling away as we speak. It looks awesome!

There is going to an amazing tasting at work the first Friday of June. It corresponds with the annual beer and slow foods festival here in DC: Savor. Guests will include Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head, Adam Avery of Avery Brewing, Curt Decker of Nodding Head, Greg Koch of Stone Brewing and Bill Madden of Mad Fox. It is going to be awesome!

Finally, DC has been struck by a freak heatwave with temperatures in the low to mid 90’s. It is hot, it is sticky and it is rough. Co-incidentally, it corresponds with the first week the Bell’s Oberon came to town this year. So we’ve been sitting on porches and stoops drinking the Oberon.

Went to Bootlegger Brewery in Fullerton last Friday. Like a lot of small 2nd , 3rd (what generation of the brewing revival are we in?) breweries, these guys do almost nothing traditional or normal. Almost their whole line is focused on what I would call unique, specialty styles.

Favorite: Black Phoenix, Chipotle Coffee Stout

also the Spice-anator version they had on tap at the brewery which had enough chipotle to give you the paradox of wanting to drink more to cool the heat but knowing it would only increase the heat. This over the top version is fun but the standard version really has excellent balance between smoked malt, chipotle heat and smokiness and the richness of the coffee.

Just in case someone is coming the Nashville TN area, here are my suggestions. Yazoo is in the middle of moving from Marathon Motor Building to a much larger space in the Gulch. It is a noisy room but having a beer outside is very nice. We are looking forward to going Cool Springs Brewery in the future. Plus, a new place in downtown Franklin just opened up with the name of Battleground Brewry. If you are interested in an hour drive north, stop off at the Blackhorse in Clarksville. They have a very light, summery beer called Vanilla Ale. It takes like Creame Soda. Very little beer taste. The stout is a bit hoppy for me, but tasty.
